always a work in progress, serving students and parents

Introduction

Music and other Arts are no longer extracurricular and optional. The federal government states that music and other arts are core-academic subjects. PMA/SMA is a combined effort of local parents, students and community leaders. We band together as a powerful arts and civil rights advocacy to restore and expand music and all arts for all kids with equal access. Through PMA/SMA, your voice will be heard and together we will advocate on behalf of student rights under the protection of the U.S. Constitution.

"Woodchopper's Ball" Watercolor by Jee-Shaun Wang,
Mark Keppel High School, class of 2008, 2nd Place winner of the Adam Schiff 29th Congressional District Arts Competition 2008,

47% of music and arts classes have been cut since 2005 in all Alhambra USD schools, K through 8th grade. Jee-Shaun began his visual arts training in AUSD elementary school and had the advantage of outsourced additional training from his sister. But today, with no full-time visual arts teachers and no-equal access in AUSD elementary classes from K through 8th grade, award winning art such as this is not likely. Beginning art in high school is better-late-than-never, but it is too late for maximum artistic benefits, brain development and a well rounded education of students.

NAMM 2009 Gallup's Poll
73% believe that children should be exposed to music before the age of five, including 51% who say exposure to music should happen before the child has his first birthday. 61% say that music plays a significant role in pre-school development and 63% strongly agree that it's important for a child to engage in musical activities in a daycare or pre-school setting.

Over 90% acknowledge the social and academic benefits of music education. 96% of poll respondents said that playing in a schoolband develops strong teamwork skills, 96% said that music is an essential component of a well-rounded education, and 94% said that schools should offer music as part of the regular curriculum. Similar numbers agreed that music helps develop creative skills and intellectual development, and that it prepares children to be "creative and innovative in the workplace."
